Calling all kids…

July 26, 2007

Alright, This goes out to all kids that watch football (soccer).

Support your football (soccer) team whether it be MLS, European or a National side with passion! Learn 3 or 4 songs/chants for the team you support (there are kid friendly chants/songs). NEVER let ANYONE
tell you to "be quiet because you’re cheering to loudly"! (unless it’s
your parents…but give them a big sigh if they do) Ask your parent(s)
to take you to a professional match. If you don’t have an MLS team, go
to a A-league match, if you don’t have a A-League team go to a college
or even a high school match…..Go watch players that are at a higher
level to understand their touch and control on the ball.

Love the sport and defend it.
You kids in the the US will get bombarded with American football,
basketball, baseball, etc., and may be teased or even called names for enjoying football
(soccer). If that should happen don’t let them get to you, it’s usually because they don’t understand the sport, so
it’s up to you to teach them.

If they still want to say things like "soccer is an easy sport" (or something worse), challenge them to get in the goal and try to stop some shots.

Yea i would have to agree with the part that kids get teased for playing. When i was in 4/5th grade kids used to make fun of me because i was doing something that was different. Not that any of the kids knew why they were making fun of me, it still got to me. Eventually I learnedto get over it and i actually benefitted from it. In 7/8th i kicked for my grade school football team and had a gamewinning field goal. everyone was glad that I had played soccer becasue if not we would have lost. Now in high school kids give me respect because of how they game is rising in popularity. Im glad i never gave in to being made fun of and kept through it becasue it would have made a differece of the type of player I am today

Like basketball, and unlike say baseball or American football, soccer is a game which allows the players a lot of freedom of personal expression. The bonus is that, unlike basketball, the last two minutes of a soccer match does not take half-an-hour. I really believe that a lot of the ‘blame’ for its lack of popularity here is the lack of statistics; which Americans are so fond of.

I’m glad you stuck to your guns. Just remind them that roughly half of the Euro 2004 matches had a greater tv audience than the Super Bowl. Or, at least, I think I heard that…

Got something to say?
