American Football Revolt…What’s adidas up to?

August 9, 2007

As you know adidas has been running the Impossible Is Nothing campaign and have recently sent our a survey about the YouTube commercial they did with Becks and Reggie Bush.  What I found interesting about the survey was the question they asked,

"Everyone around the world, except in the US, calls soccer "futbol."

Do you believe it should be called "futbol" in the US too?"

Actually the call it football, futbol, fussball, calcio, footy but generally I think football is more of the universal understanding.  Some may disagree but, why the hell not?  I responded  yes it should be football, as it is what it is, and stated I’d support the American Revolution to change the name in the US.  Anyone interested in trying, it might be fun?  Impossible is Nothing right adidas?

Calm down, calm down, calm down, calm down…

I have to say I am not a supporter of David Beckham as a player, but….(Some) MLS supporters need to calm down.  I can appreciate people are upset having to wait for him to come to the US, then they have to wait for him to play and then they have to wait longer because he’s unable to play on his debut.

Having said that, Becks was playing injured during his last season with Real Madrid.  He was receiving injections in his ankle so he would be able to play.  The problem with that is while he was able to play, it did more damage his ankle and caused bone spurs.  For people who have not had the pleasure of having ankle issues and/or bone spurs, it is NOT a pleasant feeling.

Another issue that was brought up is why he didn’t travel with his team.  He stayed back for a couple known reasons:

1. To continue Physical Therapy
2. Flying can aggravate the ankle causing it to flare up again

In closing, people need to relax and let Beckham fully recover and not cause any more damage.
I know it’s frustrating, but here’s a few things to keep in mind…

1. Becks will be playing in MLS for at least 4 more seasons
2.It’s better  to wait and have him back at 100% , than him coming back to soon, doing more damage and be out longer or quite possibly for good.

Weigh the options and I think you’ll agree.

Cheers,
Scott

Your Game: You got behind the defense…now what?

August 6, 2007

Last week I posted about one way how to get behind the defense quickly.  I said I would follow-up with some advice on how to consider all options once you get behind the defense and how to create other opportunities and here is one to consider.

So, you got behind the backs and you’re an outside mid gunning down on goal.  You have your mark chasing you and the sweeper is on his way over to tackle you.  You hopefully should have some support coming down the middle and opposite wing.  Take the ball as fast and as far as you can toward that near pole.  Remain cognizant of the options that open up along the way.  You would be amazed what happens to defenders that ball watch and don’t track their marks.

Doing this will pull the keep to one side thus exposing the net for an oncoming teammate if you decide to slot the ball over for them to finish in an open goal.  Although, timing is critical and you have to be in control at pace!

If you’ve advanced quick enough - it’s you and keeps 1 v 1.  The two most likely options will be, beat the keeper and score or lay it off across the box to your support.  Easy right?  Let’s see how these guys get it done!

The Homeless World Cup

August 3, 2007

My partner Chris brought this to my attention The Homeless World Cup!  I don’t know why I have never heard about it until now so, if you have not either I would recommend supporting the cause.  Here is a little background:

"The Homeless World Cup exists to be a catalyst for lasting change through the development of street
soccer worldwide in a way that that creates a maximum social impact for the players
involved – socially excluded, homeless people and people living in
poverty.

This is accomplished firstly by creating a top quality,
well-recognized annual Homeless World Cup flagship event and secondly,
by a continuous Homeless World Cup grass roots development
programmes around the world to ensure that many more people benefit.

And it works.  77% of players involved significantly change their lives forever."

You can make a donation here and buy a T-shirt here or join the Fan Club here.  I don’t know why this escaped me and am ticked that I am just finding out now.

If I can effect or have an influence on anyone that reads this, please consider doing something from one of the options above.  If you are a member of the ZZ Community I hope you will spread the word and pass on this to your friends.

The event is being held now July 29 - Aug. 4 in Copenhagen, Denmark.  Please watch this video and please think about taking some kind of action to help…I know I will.
